On February 7, community partners in Lucena City came together to champion women’s health through Project CERVIXyo Year 6: Prevent Today, Protect Tomorrow!, a cervical cancer awareness and screening initiative held at Barangay Marketview. The project was spearheaded by the Rotaract Club of Lucena South and the Rotary Club of Lucena South in collaboration with the Quezon Medical Center Women’s Health Center, the Lucena City Department of Health Office, and the Sangguniang Barangay of Marketview.

The initiative aimed to improve access to preventive healthcare services and increase awareness about cervical cancer—one of the most preventable yet still common cancers among women. A total of 40 women residents from Barangay Marketview participated in the activity, beginning with registration and a health orientation focused on cervical cancer prevention, risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of early detection.

Health professionals from Quezon Medical Center facilitated an educational session that encouraged women to prioritize regular screening and proactive health practices. The session helped address common misconceptions and knowledge gaps that often prevent women from seeking timely medical care.

Following the orientation, participants underwent individual interviews and basic health assessments to determine their eligibility for screening. These included discussions on reproductive health history and other relevant medical conditions to ensure safe and appropriate procedures.

Cervical cancer screening was then conducted using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), a widely used, cost-effective method for detecting early cervical abnormalities. Out of the 40 participants, 35 women proceeded with the screening, while five were deemed ineligible due to prior hysterectomy.

Among those screened, 28 participants had negative VIA results, while seven showed positive findings that required further medical attention. Immediate treatment through thermal ablation was provided to four participants, while others were referred for additional evaluation and follow-up care.

Through initiatives like Project CERVIXyo, Lucena City continues to promote women’s health, strengthen community awareness, and encourage early detection—helping protect lives through prevention and education.
