LUCENA CITY, Quezon — While much of the city settled into the quiet of the night, members of the Rotaract Club of Lucena South traveled from one area to another carrying hot meals, bread, and coffee—not for a celebration, but as a gesture of gratitude for the people who help keep the community safe after dark.

On June 19, 2026, the club conducted the eighth year of Project SEKYU, a community service initiative dedicated to recognizing the efforts of security guards and barangay tanods who remain on duty through the night. By visiting various locations across Lucena City, Rotaractors distributed food and beverages to more than 100 guards and tanods, offering both nourishment and encouragement during their shifts.

Project SEKYU was organized to acknowledge the commitment of these often-unseen community frontliners and to remind them that their service is recognized and appreciated. The initiative reflects Rotary's Community Service Avenue and supports Rotary's Area of Focus on Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention by honoring individuals who contribute to the safety and security of local neighborhoods every day.

Throughout the evening, volunteers personally delivered the meals and spent time interacting with recipients. Beyond the food served, the exchanges of smiles, conversations, and heartfelt expressions of gratitude highlighted the connection between the volunteers and the men and women working through the night.

The project also underscored how simple acts of appreciation can foster a stronger sense of belonging and motivation within the community. By recognizing those who quietly carry out their responsibilities, the initiative encouraged a culture of kindness and respect for everyday public service.

As Project SEKYU marked its eighth year, the Rotaract Club of Lucena South expressed its gratitude to its Rotaractors, partners, and supporters whose collective efforts made the initiative possible. The continued implementation of the project reflects the club's commitment to community service and to recognizing the individuals whose dedication helps keep Lucena City safe, one night at a time.
